AI Feature Documentation: How to Write Docs That Help Users Trust and Use AI Well

TL;DR

AI feature documentation has a different job than traditional feature docs. It's not just explaining where the button is — it's calibrating expectations, teaching interaction patterns, explaining limitations honestly, and building enough trust that users are willing to integrate AI into consequential workflows. Bad AI docs create over-trusting users who accept wrong outputs or under-trusting users who never adopt. This guide covers what effective AI documentation includes and how to write it.

What the AI does (and doesn't do)

Be specific about the AI's scope. 'This AI summarizes contracts' is less useful than 'This AI identifies and summarizes key clauses in commercial contracts up to 50 pages. It works best on standard commercial agreements. It is not designed for regulatory filings or patent documents.' The more specific the scope description, the more useful the documentation — and the fewer support tickets you'll receive from users trying to use the feature outside its intended scope.

How to get good results (prompting guidance)

Most users won't read a separate 'how to prompt' guide. Embed prompting guidance directly in the feature documentation as concrete examples: 'Instead of [weak prompt example], try [strong prompt example].' Show the actual difference in output quality. Users who see the contrast between a generic and specific prompt are far more likely to adopt the better pattern.

What to trust vs. verify

Be explicit: which outputs can users rely on at face value, and which should they verify? 'The AI is highly accurate on [X] — our internal testing shows [Y]% accuracy. For [Z] type of content, we recommend reviewing the output against [source] before using it.' This is honesty that builds trust rather than eroding it.

Known limitations and edge cases

Document what the AI doesn't do well. This seems counterintuitive for marketing reasons, but users discover limitations regardless — the question is whether they discover them through docs (controlled) or through production failures (uncontrolled). Known limitations documented honestly build more trust than undisclosed limitations discovered through failure.

Overview page

What this AI does, who it's for, and what problem it solves. Include a brief video or GIF showing the AI in action. End with a 'best for / not for' table that sets scope immediately. This page should answer the question 'is this for me?' in under 60 seconds.

Getting started guide

Step-by-step walkthrough of the first successful use case. Include actual example prompts and outputs, not screenshots of the empty interface. This is your highest-value documentation page — users who successfully complete it have dramatically higher activation rates.

Prompting and tips guide

Side-by-side examples of weak vs. strong prompts for 5–10 common use cases. Tables showing input variations and their effect on output. Tips for specific domains if the AI has domain-specific behaviors. Updated monthly as you learn what prompts work best.

Limitations and known issues

Specific, honest list of what the AI doesn't do well. Link to workarounds or alternative approaches where they exist. A 'not designed for' section that explicitly calls out misuse patterns. Updated when new limitations are discovered through production use.

Writing Style for AI Documentation

Use concrete examples, not abstract descriptions

"The AI summarizes documents" tells the user very little. "The AI reads a 20-page contract and produces a structured summary of: parties, key dates, payment terms, termination clauses, and unusual provisions — in under 10 seconds" tells them exactly what to expect. Concrete specifics build realistic expectations and demonstrate genuine capability.

Address the 'what happens if it's wrong' question

Every user of an AI product implicitly asks: what happens when it's wrong? Acknowledge this directly in your documentation rather than pretending failures don't happen. 'When the AI is uncertain, it will indicate this. We recommend reviewing [X category of outputs] against [Y source] before using in [high-stakes context].'

Avoid capability inflation

Documentation that oversells AI capability creates a trust deficit the product can never repay. 'AI-powered' and 'industry-leading AI' are marketing phrases that make documentation readers less confident, not more. Describe what the AI actually does with evidence: accuracy rates, test performance, concrete examples. Let the capability speak for itself.

Keep docs current with model changes

AI documentation goes stale when the underlying model changes. Build a documentation review into your model update process: whenever the model changes, flag all documentation that describes AI behavior and review for accuracy. Stale docs that describe old AI behavior mislead users and generate support tickets.

AI Documentation Mistakes

No differentiation from traditional feature docs

AI feature documentation written in the same style as 'click here, then here, then here' traditional docs misses the unique requirements of AI: expectation setting, trust calibration, and interaction model teaching. AI docs need to educate, not just instruct.

Documentation that's only updated at launch

AI products change continuously. A documentation page that describes the AI's behavior at launch will be meaningfully inaccurate within 3–6 months. Build documentation maintenance into your sprint cadence — not as a one-time launch deliverable but as ongoing product work.

Hiding the limitations section

Burying known limitations in a FAQ or appending them at the end of long pages ensures users won't read them. Limitations that would affect a user's decision to use a feature belong near the top of the feature overview, not hidden at the bottom of a support article.

No example prompts for the user's industry

Generic prompting examples don't resonate as strongly as industry-specific ones. If you serve multiple verticals, provide prompting examples for each. 'How a legal team uses this' and 'how a marketing team uses this' are more actionable than generic examples, and they drive higher adoption in each segment.
