Tencent Hunyuan Hy4 for Product Managers: What You Need to Know
TL;DR
Tencent released Hunyuan Hy4 as an open-weight preview in August 2026: 770 billion total parameters, 49 billion active per token, and a context window exceeding one million tokens. It is Apache 2.0 licensed, available on Hugging Face and OpenRouter, and priced at $0.83 per million input tokens. For AI PMs, Hy4 matters because it is one of the first fully open frontier-class models with the scale and context length needed for long-horizon agentic tasks — competitive document analysis, multi-step coding, and cross-document reasoning — at inference costs that fit a real product budget.

What Hunyuan Hy4 Actually Is
Tencent confirmed Hy4 was in training on its August 2026 Q2 earnings call, then released a preview on August 28. The model is part of Tencent's Hunyuan family, which has been competing at the frontier of Chinese AI model development since 2023. Hy4 is a significant architectural step up from earlier Hunyuan releases, primarily because of its scale and its context window.
The core architecture is a Mixture of Experts (MoE) transformer. That matters for product decisions because it separates total parameter count from active parameter count — the model carries 770 billion parameters in total, but only 49 billion are activated for any given input token. This means inference is significantly cheaper than a dense model of equivalent quality would be.
The Apache 2.0 license is significant. It allows commercial use, modification, and redistribution without royalties, which is not true of all open-weight models. Llama 3's license has commercial use restrictions at scale; Hy4 does not carry those restrictions under its current terms.
Why the Context Window Changes the Product Math
Most frontier-class open-weight models released through mid-2026 topped out at 128K to 256K context tokens in practice. Hy4's one-million-token window is a material difference, not a marketing number. Here is why it matters for product decisions.
Long document workflows become tractable
One million tokens is roughly 750,000 words, or about three full legal contracts, a 1,000-page technical manual, or several hundred support tickets at once. Use cases that previously required chunking and retrieval can run in a single pass.
Multi-session agent memory
Long-horizon agentic tasks that span hours or days can carry full conversation history without truncation. This is relevant for any product where an agent needs to remember a user's earlier decisions or accumulated context.
Cost scales with actual use
At $0.83 per million input tokens, a 500K-token document costs about $0.42 to process. That is affordable for enterprise document review, expensive for consumer apps where every user loads a novel.
Latency is still a constraint
Processing a full million-token context takes measurable seconds even on optimized infrastructure. For latency-sensitive product flows, the full context window is not always the right choice even when it is technically available.
Benchmarks: What They Show and What They Do Not
Tencent describes Hy4 as comprehensively scaled up in model size, context length, and data scale, with stated strengths in coding and long document analysis. Third-party aggregators show Hy4 performing competitively on agentic and long-context evaluations against models like GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet. As an AI PM, here is how to read those numbers.
Coding benchmarks
What the benchmarks show: Hy4 scores well on HumanEval and SWE-bench style coding tasks. Tencent describes this as a primary use case. Third-party results place it near the top tier of open-weight models on code generation.
PM take: If your product involves code generation, code review, or documentation from code, Hy4 is worth a head-to-head eval against your current stack. The open-weight status means you can self-host for sensitive code rather than sending it to a third-party API.
Long-context retrieval
What the benchmarks show: Models with 1M-token windows often show quality degradation in the middle of very long contexts. Early results suggest Hy4 handles this better than its predecessor Hunyuan models, though independent benchmarks with verified methodology are still limited.
PM take: Do not assume the benchmark holds for your specific document types and query patterns. Run your own needle-in-a-haystack eval on the first 50K and 500K positions before shipping a long-document feature.
Multilingual performance
What the benchmarks show: Hy4 is trained on a large Chinese-English bilingual corpus. Performance on Chinese is strong. Performance on other languages drops notably compared to dedicated multilingual models.
PM take: If your product serves non-English, non-Chinese users, Hy4 is not an obvious choice over models trained specifically for multilingual use.

Use Cases: Where Hy4 Fits and Where It Does Not
Every model has a product niche where it is the right answer. Hy4 is not a universal replacement for GPT-4o or Claude Opus — it is a strong choice for a specific set of product scenarios.
Long-document analysis (legal, compliance, research)
1M context, strong on retrieval across long passages, affordable per-document pricing.
On-premise or private cloud code review
Apache 2.0 lets you self-host, keeping proprietary code off external APIs.
Long-horizon coding agents
Built and tested for multi-step agentic coding tasks, strong SWE-bench results.
Chinese-language enterprise products
Strong Chinese performance, familiar regulatory context for Chinese enterprises.
Latency-sensitive consumer apps
MoE at this scale is slower on cold starts than smaller, dense models like GPT-4o Mini.
Multilingual products beyond Chinese and English
Coverage drops sharply for other languages; use a dedicated multilingual model instead.
How to Access Hy4 and What to Budget
Hy4 has three main access paths, each with different tradeoffs for a product team.
OpenRouter API
$0.83 / million input tokens, $2.50 / million output tokens
Best for prototyping and low-to-medium volume production. No infrastructure to manage. Model ID: tencent/hy4-preview. Rate limits apply.
Tencent Cloud TokenHub
Same rates as OpenRouter ($0.83 / $2.50), with volume discount tiers
Best for high-volume production or if your product is already on Tencent Cloud. Better SLA options than OpenRouter for enterprise customers.
Self-hosted (Hugging Face weights)
GPU infrastructure cost only. Weights are free under Apache 2.0.
Best for sensitive data (legal, healthcare, finance) where sending data to an external API is a compliance issue. Requires significant GPU investment: Hy4 at 49B active parameters needs multiple A100 or H100 GPUs for production throughput.
The "preview" label is worth taking seriously. Tencent has not announced general availability milestones for Hy4. Rate limits are more restrictive than fully released models, and the API endpoint could change. Build your product stack with a model abstraction layer so you can switch to a stable release or an alternative without rewriting your integration.
