The Anatomy of an AI PM Job Description
Every AI PM JD has the same structure — and each section signals something different about what the company is actually testing for in the loop.
The "About Us" Section
Read this for AI maturity signals: "building AI-native products" vs. "exploring AI capabilities" vs. "integrating AI into existing workflows." These three phrasings describe three very different roles. AI-native means AI is the product. Exploring means you'll be doing a lot of internal education. Integrating means AI is a layer on something that already exists.
The Responsibilities Section
This is where the role's actual focus lives — but it's written for internal HR, not for candidates. The top three bullet points are the most important. Bullets four through ten are often boilerplate. Read the top three as the interview's primary case themes.
The Requirements Section
Split this into hard requirements (things that will disqualify you if missing) and signal requirements (things that tell you what the interview will test). "5+ years of PM experience" is a hard requirement. "Experience with LLM evaluation" is a signal that the case interview will test evaluation design.
Decoding the Most Common AI PM JD Phrases

What it signals: the interview will test whether you can translate between technical and business contexts. Prepare stories that demonstrate you've worked alongside engineers or data scientists — where you influenced technical decisions without writing code. If you don't have this experience, prepare to explain how you'd operate in that context with specific examples of adjacent work.

"Comfort with ambiguity and rapid iteration"
What it signals: the team ships fast, specs change, and they need someone who doesn't wait for complete information before acting. The behavioral interview will probe this directly: 'Tell me about a time you made a product decision without enough data.' Prepare a specific story — not a philosophy about ambiguity tolerance.

"Define and track product metrics"
What it signals: the case interview will almost certainly include a metrics question — either 'how would you measure success for this AI feature?' or 'this metric dropped 15%, walk me through your diagnosis.' Prepare for AI-specific metrics: evaluation scores, model quality degradation, user trust signals, and the difference between leading and lagging quality indicators.

"Work closely with research and data science teams"
What it signals: this is a more technical PM role — likely at a company where the model itself is core IP, not a vendor API. The interview will test your ability to speak credibly about model tradeoffs, data pipeline thinking, and evaluation design. Study evaluation frameworks and be prepared to go deeper on technical questions than a standard AI PM loop.

"Drive responsible AI practices"
What it signals: the company has either shipped something problematic or is proactively investing in trust and safety. Prepare to discuss specific responsible AI risks (bias, hallucination, misuse) and how you'd scope mitigations as product requirements — not as post-launch cleanup. This phrase almost always surfaces in the final-round interview or the hiring manager screen.
How to Use a JD to Build Your Interview Prep Plan
A JD is a preparation document, not just a qualification checklist. Here's how to use it to build a targeted interview prep plan in 30 minutes.
Step 1: Extract the Top 3 Case Themes
Read the top three responsibility bullets and convert each into a potential case question. 'Define the AI product roadmap' becomes 'Design a 6-month roadmap for this AI feature.' 'Drive evaluation frameworks' becomes 'How would you measure quality for this AI product?' These are your most likely case prompts.
Step 2: Map Requirements to Behavioral Stories
For each requirement that uses past-tense language ('experience with,' 'track record of'), you need a behavioral story ready. List the top five requirements and write one sentence for the story that addresses each. If you can't write a story for a requirement, that's a gap — either in your experience or in how you're framing your experience.
Step 3: Identify the Technical Depth Signal
Does the JD mention specific technical terms — RAG, fine-tuning, evals, agentic systems, LLM APIs? Each named concept is likely to appear in a technical screen or system design question. Google each term you're not fluent in and add it to your interview prep materials.
Step 4: Research the Company's AI Product
Use the JD's product description to identify what the company's AI product actually does. Then spend 30 minutes as a user if you can — or read public product documentation. In the case interview, knowing the product specifically is worth more than any general framework.

Not every AI PM JD describes a real AI PM role. These signals suggest you should investigate further before investing time in the application.
"AI" appears only in the company description, not the role responsibilities
This is a traditional PM role at a company that does AI — not an AI PM role. The interview will test standard product management skills, not AI product management specifically. Worth applying to if you want any PM role, but won't advance your AI PM positioning.
The technical requirements far outnumber the product requirements
JDs with 8 technical requirements and 2 product ones are looking for a technical PM or a product engineer — not an AI PM. These roles often want someone who can write SQL, deploy models, or build internal tooling. The interview will skew heavily technical in ways an AI PM program may not prepare you for.
The JD was posted more than 90 days ago
Most companies remove job postings when they fill a role — but not always. A JD that's been live for 90+ days either means the role is genuinely hard to fill (a good signal for your candidacy) or the company has changed direction and the JD is stale. Worth a quick message to a recruiter before investing prep time.
